This is an underground reservoir called the Basilica Cistern (its on the other side of the road from the Aya Sofia, formerly the Hagia Sofia, or Basilica). It dates back to 523AD, and is pretty stunning. Made with pillars stolen from around Greece I think, and includes two busts of Medusa, one on side, one wrong way up.
Awesome
ReplyDeleteThat pretty much sums it up, Bill. It kinda takes your breath away when you walk down the steps, they've lit it really well. Amazing too that it really doesn't smell. There are carp swimming in the remaining water. The next question I guess is, "How did they get there??"
